Q. How big are hummingbirds?
A. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are 3 - 3.75 inches long with a wingspan of 4 - 4.75 inches. Rufous hummingbirds are 3.5 - 4 inches long with a wingspan of 4.25 inches.
Fueled by the nectar, hummingbirds double their weight as they prepare to fly hundreds or even thousands of miles. Males leave first, as early as mid-July. Females follow, and then the young who migrate for the first time all alone.
By April, the overwintering monarchs have only a few weeks to live. Their wings have changed dramatically. Images in this photo gallery show what happens and why.
