Diciembre ha sido considerado el mes en el que las Monarca definen sus sitios de hibernación encontrando el descanso largamente deseado -después de su largo viaje al sur- bajo los tibios rayos de sol en sus bosques de árboles de Oyamel.

December is usually the month when monarchs begin to consolidate. Monarchs usually search and then settle into colonies that provide shelter after their long journey south. However, after only a month and a half since arrival, monarchs are still very active and are occupying sites that are annual for this time in the overwintering season.

The answer to last week’s ID question of the 2 birds flying with the Sandhill Cranes is Whooping Cranes. Included is a photo of just the two Whooping Cranes. They are larger than Sandhill Cranes and are mostly white with black tips on their wings. Both photos were taken by Kenny Younger.

Dear friends,
It has been a whole month since the monarch butterflies arrived here in Mexico. The weather has been perfect, sunny days with moderately cold nights. A good rainy season has provided ideal levels of water and humidity in the Oyamel fir forests. The warm winter begins, and the monarchs have relocated in both Sanctuaries.
For over 25 years, Journey North volunteers have heralded the arrivals and departures of migratory wildlife.

On my walk in the Arb today I noticed that most of the trees had lost their leaves. Exceptions include some of the Oak Trees and the Beach Trees. The ponds are frozen over but the springs like Big Spring is open at the spring itself as well as the outflow with the water temperature at 50 to 55 degrees all winter.
