The monarchs of the overwintering generation have only a few weeks left to live. The worn-winged butterflies are no longer their brilliant orange. Most monarchs from this generation will die by the first of May. At this time of the migration season, Journey North volunteers are observing multiple generations of monarchs.

April’s sightings are now tracking monarch movement both east and north, as their range expands through both California and Arizona. With sightings now on the western side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, how soon will they appear in Nevada?

Here are the new bird arrivals in the UW Arboretum while I was down in Arboretum South (Florida).

Reports are picking up in northeast Texas and Oklahoma. The leading edge of migration ( around latitude 36°N) is ever so slightly behind where it was at this same time last year. The northernmost report is from Bluff City, Kansas. Farther east, monarchs are making their way up through the Carolinas.

Así como ustedes, queridos amigos del norte, quedarán sorprendidos, nosotros también estamos sorprendidos con preocupación al estar esta mañana de Lunes 4 de Abril en el paraje “Río Grande” viendo que una menor, pero aún significativa población de Monarcas están aún aquí después de casi un mes de haberse comenzado a bajar a este punto después de sus áreas originales de hibernación en el Santuario “El Rosario”.
