This is an aerial view of a monarch butterfly colony. In order to estimate the area the colony covers, scientists walk through the forest and decide which trees contain enough butterflies to be considered part of the colony. They visit all 12 overwintering sites, measure the perimeter of each colony, then calculate the total area of forest the butterflies occupy.
