Journey North & BSCS/FieldScope Educational Modules

In 2020, a team of educators reviewed Journey North educational materials and identified data literacy as a key area to pursue in the future. In 2021, Nancy Sheehan, Journey North Program Coordinator, collaborated with various staff at BSCS/FieldScope to upload and design several modules aimed at enhancing education and data literacy, fulfilling this educational niche. The goal of these visualizations is to provide intuitive, engaging tools for learning and analysis. These modules are designed to help students and the public develop critical skills in interpreting and understanding volunteer-contributed data, fostering a better grasp of scientific concepts and methodologies. By interacting with visual data, learners can more easily comprehend complex patterns and trends in wildlife migration. Additionally, these modules encourage all learners to think critically about data sources and quality and to draw informed conclusions, thus bridging the gap between abstract data and real-world applications.

Journey North Visualizations

Nancy Sheehan, Journey North Program Coordinator, created several data visualizations that are showcased on her Tableau Public site. These visualizations were designed with Journey North volunteers in mind to address their questions and interests. Sheehan hoped that these visualizations will foster a deeper connection between the volunteers and the data they contribute. Through these visualizations, users can interact with and analyze data, gain critical data literacy skills, and develop a more comprehensive understanding of wildlife migration and its broader ecological implications. Below are a sample of these visualizations.
